What is an automatic refrigerator?

Ok so I really hope this is not an obvious answer and I just took the name of this out of context. But I was readin an old (1950's) cookbook and it said something about and automatic refrigerator and I was like "what the heck" lol so is this just what they called a fridge back then or is this something else?
